Geography
Koh Samui is a tropical island located in the Gulf of Thailand on the South China sea. The island is around 35 kilmetres northeast of the mainland and Surat Thani town. Koh Samui is some 21 kilometres at its widest point and 25 kilometres at its longest. There are around sixty other islands that surround Samui, which compose of Ang Thong National Marine Park and other tourist destinations incuding Koh Phan Ngan, Ko Tao and Koh Nang Yuan.
Koh Samui is a rough circle in shape and about 15 kilometres across. The interior of the island is a mountainous jungle, peaking on Kao Pom mountain at a height of nearly 700 metres. The coastal areas of Samui are connected with a single 50 kilometre concrete ring road which encircles most of the island.
The commercial, transport and administrative hub of the island is the old capital town of Nathon on the west coast. Here you will find ferries to the mainland and other surrounding islands. Nathon has a charming pace and is small enough to explore by foot. Be sure to check out the old Chinese shop houses in the small middle streets which give a glimpse into Koh Samui's past.
The primary beaches on the north and east coasts of Samui are now all considered to be small towns because of the number of hotels, restaurants and bars located there.
