Big Buddha
The Big Buddha is one of Koh Samui's most visited attractions. The Buddha, which sits 15 metres tall, was build by locals in 1972 as a place for visitors to pay respect to the Buddha. This impressive landmark is located in Bangrak, near the fish market and has beautiful views of the coastline.
Baan Plai Laem Temple
Next to Big Buddha, Plai Laem Temple is known for it's large pond with hundreds of fish. Plai Laem has a huge 18-armed Buddha statue and is the most colourful temple on the island.
Mummified Monk
The mummified monk resides in a temple, Wat Khunaram, on the south coast of the island. The legend says that a wealthy resident of Koh Samui, Loung Pordaeng, who gave up all his earthly possessions when he became a Buddhist, died in 1973. As his followers noticed that he was not decaying, they displayed him in a glass coffin, believing this to be a Buddhist miracle.
Hin Ta Hin Yai
Known locally as 'Grandfather and Grandmother rocks', these rocks are entirely formed by the elements. Two amazingly accurate female and male genitalia shaped rock formations overlook the sea on the south west coast of the island.
Namuang Waterfall and Safari Park
The Namuang waterfalls are located south of the island's mountainous central peaks. A 30 metre tall waterfall cascades over a rock face into a deep pool that is nice for a cooling dip if it's not too busy. Near the car parking area are a number of souvenir stalls and some 'real' Thai food stalls which serve delicious barbequed chicken and papaya salad.
If you're feeling adventurous try the elephant trek in the jungle near the falls.
Further down the road is the 'Namuang Safari Park' which offers elephant rides, monkey shows, snakes and crocodile shows to name but a few.
Samui Tiger Zoo and Aquarium
Located at the Samui Orchid Resort at Ban Harn beach on the South of Samui, this aquarium has a great collection of tropical fish and aquatic creatures. You can hand feed the turtles and then watch the amazing tiger and bird shows. Really great fun for kids.
Paradise Park Farm
Spend a day on Samui’s highest peak, covered by tropical rainforest. Play with the monkeys, visit the avaries, feed the emus and pat the ponies. Relax at the infinity edge swimming pool, relax in the restaurant and enjoy a drink at the bar. A stunning day out for all the family.
Angthong National Marine Park
Ang Thong National Marine Park consists of over 40 islands featuring lime stone massifs, deserted beaches and tropical rainforests. Within sight of Koh Samui, the Ang Thong islands rise from the sea, climbing hundreds of metres high. There are the many small bays and beautiful beaches and erosion has shaped some interesting formations. The most polpular features are Mae Ko (beautiful beach) and Thale Nai (emerald saltwater lake) both of which are found on Koh Mae Ko. Koh Sam Sao has a huge rock arch, coral reef and a hill providing amazing views of the surrounding islands. Wildlife inhabiting the islands includes the long tailed monkey (langur), hair nosed otters, lizards, ashy drongos, pacific reef egrets, white bellied sea eagles, tortoises, sea turtles and pythons. You can also try kayaking, snorkeling and swimming.
Butterfly Garden
The Samui Butterfly Garden is at Laem Natien and is an enclosed tropical area with hundreds of butterflies, an insect display and some bee-hives. Also visit the hillside observatory and observation platforms which offer breathtaking views of the coast.
Monkey Theatre
Located in Bophut, this performing zoo has monkey shows several times a day. Small monkeys are trained to perform different tricks on stage and then they climb the trees to give a coconut harvesting demonstration, a unique skill which the area's monkeys are still used for today.
Snake Shows
The Samui Snake Farm in the south-west corner of Koh Samui is a very popular and entertaining family attraction. Twice daily, visitors can watch and enjoy the only Snake Show on Koh Samui.
